Secret (and not-so-secret) Swimming Holes

There’s nothing quite like a cool dip on a hot summer day. Throughout the Northwest, there are hundreds (if not thousands) of swimming holes just waiting to be discovered. Over the years, Coastal customers have shared some of their favorite swimming spots with us, and we thought we’d share some of the most popular with you.

Cavitt Creek Falls
Directions: Cavitt Falls, Oregon 97457
Just east of Roseburg, Cavitt Creek Falls Reaction Site features swimming, hiking, camping, and a place to bring a picnic. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you come across a small waterfall and deep pool encased by solid rocks.
Deschutes River State Recreation Area Campground
Directions: Deschutes River State Recreation Area, Wasco, Oregon 97065
Located east of The Dalles, this protected area of the Deschutes River offers a lot to those who love the outdoors, including a wonderful place to go swimming. To find it, head south of the “T” loop from the southern edge of the campground.
Ritter Road Swimming Hole
Directions: Tucked Away! (take US-395 S from Pendleton, then turn right on Ritter Road (Country Road 15) at mile marker 77 and follow the signs.
Located just a few miles from the convergence of the Middle Fork and North Fork of the John Day River, you’ll find a welcoming swimming spot. It’s a slow-moving part of the river that is enjoyed by locals. Watch out for rattle snakes in the rocks and in the grassy areas.
Sandy River at the Lewis and Clark State Recreation Site
Directions: 1 Jordan Road, Troutdale, Oregon 97060
Often overlooked, even by locals, the Sandy River is a clean, and wonderful place to float, swim, and cool down on a hot day. The swimming hole near the recreation site is easy to find and even easier to enjoy.
Walton Lake
Directions: Walton Lake, NF-2220, Prineville, Oregon 97754
Looking for serenity, nature, and swimming? You’ll find it at Walton Lake in the Ochoco Natural Forest east of Redmond. No motors are allowed on this lake, which makes it ideal for a nice swim.

Battle Ground Lake
Directions: 18002 NE 249th Street, Battle Ground, Washington 98604
Take a dip in one of the most beautiful Cascade lakes in the area and enjoy the fact that you’re in the middle of a volcanic crater. The state park also has hiking trails and more.
Boulder Beach Park
Directions: Boulder Beach, E Upriver Drive, Spokane, Washington 99217
Located east of Spokane on the way to Idaho, Boulder Beach Park sits next to the Centennial Trail and Camp Sekani Park. This is a well-loved swimming hole, so get there early to grab a spot.
Dougan Creek Falls
Directions: Dougan Falls, Washington 98671
Located near Stevenson along the Washougal River, the little pool that sits below a 12-foot falls is the perfect swimming spot. The spot also includes a wonderful beach, picnic tables in the day-use area, and a nearby campground. You will need a state-issued Discovery Pass for parking.
Douglas Falls Grange Park Campground
Directions: Douglas Falls Rd, Colville, WA 99114
Park in the campground during the day or stay overnight at this location just outside Spokane. The small swimming area sits below a stunning waterfall. There may be a fee for parking at the campground, including day use.
Eagle Falls
Directions: Eagle Falls, Washington 98251
This is a nice, deep pool with a rope swing and plenty of places to chill and relax. While it is located just outside Seattle, there are days and times of the year when there are less people at this destination. You may need a state-issued Discovery Pass for parking.
