Why Medical Professionals Wear Scrubs

May 19, 2023

Before scrubs were invented, doctors and others in medicine wore aprons over their regular clothing when examining patients or even operating. Today, scrubs have become the go-to uniform for medical professionals everywhere. Here’s why people love to wear scrubs at work and why it’s more than just a uniform.

Who Wears Scrubs?

Throughout the medical field, professionals wear scrubs when interacting with patients. These professions include dentists, doctors, nurses, and more. Check out our article 10 Scrub-Wearing Professions to get the inside scoop.

History of Scrubs

Before scrubs, doctors wore aprons to protect their clothes. Sanitation really wasn’t a concern outside of surgeries. By the turn of the 20th century, surgical staff wore special gowns over their clothes to protect themselves and their patients. By the 1970s, scrubs had become a favorite among doctors and nurses. The rest of the medical field, including dentists, veterinarians, and more took notice and began wearing scrubs.

Medical Pros Love Scrubs

It’s easy to see why people enjoy scrubs. They’re comfortable, easy to wear and wash, look professional (in a medical setting), and offer a small level of individuality. Plus, they offer medical professionals some added benefits, including:

Convenience: Scrubs are designed to be easily and quickly changed into and out of at the beginning and end of every workday. Some medical professionals will wear their scrubs home, which is also acceptable public attire. And when it comes to washing, drying and ironing, nothing beats scrubs. They’re designed for medical settings, which means otherwise impossible-to-remove stains are relatively easy to get out.
Utility: Scrubs come with a lot of pockets. They make it easy for nurses, doctors, and more to carry around notebooks, pens, smartphones, masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and a lot more. For many women used small or nearly useless pockets in their regular clothing, scrubs are a refreshing and useful change.
Protection: The special materials in scrubs help protect the wearer and their patients from bacteria and germs. Essentially, scrubs help limit cross-contamination.
Comfort: Scrubs are designed to wick away sweat, avoid chaffing, and more. Plus they come in a wide range of sizes to fit any body type. That includes everything from an extra-small to a 5XL.
