Camping and food go hand in hand. In fact, there are those who eat better when they’re camping than when they’re home. If that’s you, then you know how important the right camp stove is to your outdoor adventures.

To help you choose the right one, we compared the features and benefits of three of our most popular, portable stoves: the Coleman Triton 2-burner stove, Camp Chef 2-burner stove, and the ultra-portable Jetboil Zip Cooking System.

The Basics

All three of these stoves are great at what they do – help you cook at the campsite. The Coleman Triton is affordable and produces a strong flame with even heat. It’s an all-around trooper when it comes to cooking.

The Camp Chef is also a 2-burner stove. It’s incredibly sturdy, offers a larger cook-top space, and is freestanding. That can be a big deal if there isn’t a picnic table or other place to setup. While it is a bit bigger than the Coleman Triton (taking up more cargo space), it makes cooking a bit easier.

Finally, Jetboil’s system is one of the most portable stoves out there. It might not be big enough to feed an entire family, but it can warm up a can of soup for a group of two. True to its name, it boils water in under three minutes. Of course, that all depends on your elevation at the time, but with its one-liter insulated pot, quick auto ignition, and stabilizing capabilities, this one could be a nice addition to anyone’s backpack.

Performance

All three of the stoves have their purpose. The Coleman Triton is more affordable and portable than the Camp Chef, but the later has a larger cooking space. If you don’t plan to use more than a 12-inch skillet, the Coleman will do just fine. Anything larger, and you might want to consider the Camp Chef.

Jetboil’s zip cooking system weighs just 13.2 ounces. It comes with everything you need to boil water or heat up food when you’re on the trail.

Using Your Stove

The Coleman and Camp Chef both use propane, while the Jetboil system uses its own smaller canisters. You should expect setup to take a bit longer with the two larger stoves. While cleanup is consistent across all three options, Jetboil really is meant for hikers on the go, featuring quick and easy clean and care.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for something ultra-portable that you can just stick in your backpack and go, then the Jetboil is for you. It’s easy, fun, and meant for one or two people.

The Coleman and Camp Chef are quite similar, but vary a bit in size. The Camp Chef is slightly larger, meaning you will need more room to haul it, but you’ll also have more room to cook. Coleman is a name everyone knows and trusts, and the 2-burner camp stove is an ideal addition to any family’s camping gear.
